GMA Network, Inc.
GMA Network Incorporated is one of the two media conglomerates dominating the Philippine media landscape. Like its closest competitor, ABS-CBN Corporation, the network also has cross-media ownership and has a very strong presence across TV, radio, and online media.
The network began as a radio station that made its first broadcast on March 1, 1950. It was owned by an American, former war correspondent Robert La Rue Stewart, who later put up Republic Broadcasting System (RBS). Stewart would later be known on TV as “Uncle Bob.”
Stewart got embroiled in politics when, in 1961, the presidential candidate he was perceived to be supporting, the then incumbent president Carlos P. Garcia, lost to Diosdado Macapagal, who threatened to deport him. Stewart was then the host of the Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 Club show, and it was during the program that he announced he was leaving the country. Children and their parents rallied behind him, forcing the government to stop the persecution of Stewart.
When then president Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law on Sept. 21, 1972 and shut down the media, Stewart’s RBS was one of those allowed to operate, but it had to apply for a government permit every three months.
RBS was losing money then and it did not help that the 1973 Constitution limited ownership and management of mass media to citizens of the Philippines. Stewart ceded control of the station in 1975 to his lawyer Felipe Gozon, Gozon’s brother-in-law Menardo Jimenez, and Gilberto Duavit, Sr., Gozon’s friend and one of Marcos’ presidential assistants.
The three renamed RBS into GMA for Greater Manila Area, the initial coverage area of the station which was later changed into Global Media Arts.
Under the triumvirate’s leadership, the network flourished and became competitive. In 2007, the company went public but the Gozon, Jimenez, and Duavit families retained ownership and control of the network.
Its declared revenue for 2015 was P13.727 billion ($293 million).
Today, Felipe Gozon sits as chair and chief executive officer of of GMA Network Incorporated while Gilberto Duavit Jr., son of Duavit Sr., sits as its president and chief operating officer. Joel Marcelo Jimenez, second son of Menardo Jimenez has been a director of the network since 2002.
GMA Network Incorporated forms a duopoly in the Philippine media landscape together with its closest competitor ABS-CBN Corporation, with the two giants capturing 80.72 percent of the television audience in the Philippines. It co-owns GMA News TV with Zoe Broadcasting Network Incorporated, a media company owned by Christian pastor Eduardo Villanueva and his family.
GMA Network’s flagship radio stations are DZBB 594 on the AM band and 97.1 in the FM band.
