Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation
Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation started as the Manila Daily Bulletin in 1900, with Americans Carson Taylor and H.G. Farris as its staff. It was incorporated in 1912 as Bulletin Publishing Company, and reincorporated in 1959 as Bulletin Publishing Corporation, two years after it was acquired by Brig. Gen. Hans Menzi.
Apart from owning four plantations in Mindanao, Menzi had served as board member on some of the Philippines’ largest corporations and civic organizations. He also served as military aide of former President Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1972.
In 1961, Chinese-Filipino business tycoon Emilio T. Yap bought shares of the company from Menzi.
When Menzi died in 1984, Yap became chairman of the company. In 1986, however, the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) issued a writ sequestering the shares of Marcos, Yap, Eduardo M. Cojuangco, Jr. and their nominees and agents in Manila Bulletin on suspicions that they were part of Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth. A year later, PCGG also sequestered the shares of stock, assets, properties, records, and documents of Hans Menzi Holdings and Management, Inc.
In 1989, Bulletin changed its corporate name to Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation. A year later, Manila Bulletin became a public corporation.
In 2005, Manila Bulletin acquired from Liwayway Publishing, Inc. its Tagalog daily newspaper, Balita, and weekly vernacular magazines, Liwayway, Bisaya, Hiligaynon and Bannawag, including their trade names. Currently, the company has 15 print outlets published daily, weekly, monthly or once every quarter. Every Monday, the paper also publishes the New York Times Section.
U.S. Automotive Company, Inc. is the biggest shareholder of Manila Bulletin, with 54.2 percent ownership. It is followed by USAutoco, Inc., with 23.34 percent ownership. Both companies are owned by the Yap family.
